Chapter 10

Luke blinked, and then again, as he looked around. It took him a moment to realize he was back in Finn’s living room, lying on the sofa. Tae was seated on the floor beside him, watching with a worried expression on his face. Easing up on one elbow, Luke finally saw Finn. The man was pacing the length of the room and back, his expression even more worried than Tae’s.

“You’re back with us,” Finn said, obviously realizing Luke had moved.

“What…?” Luke frowned. The last thing he recalled was Jourdain telling him to sit. “What the hell happened? Why am I here?”

Finn blew out a breath, pulling over an armchair to sit opposite Luke. “For one, I saved you from Jourdain. For two…” He took Luke’s hands, seeming at a loss for words.

“For two, what?”

“Okay. You’ll probably think I’ve gone off the deep end, but hear me out. Remember when you were kidding about Jourdain being a vampire? Well, you were right, and right now he’s a very pissed off one, which isn’t good.”

Pulling his hands free, Luke wiped one of them over his face, trying to figure out what the hell Finn was talking about. “Want to run that by me in English, so it makes sense? Because right now I do think you’re out of your fucking mind.”

“I wish it was that easy.” Finn rested his elbows on his knees, staring at Luke. “What’s the last thing you remember?”

“He told me to sit, and I did.”

“Okay. And before that?”

“He…” Luke frowned. “He was upset because you picked me up from class, only I didn’t tell him it was you. I said you were a guy I met in class and we were going to go study.”

“Did he believe you?”

“Uh-huh. I think. He said he forgave me. I told him there was nothing to forgive. I think—yeah. I said he didn’t own me. That I appreciated his help, but…Then he put a finger on my lips and said he was going to take me home with him. I got pissed and jumped up. He looked at me, told me—no, ordered me to sit and…It was like I didn’t have any choice. I sat.”

“That’s because, in point of fact, there was no choice. He compelled you to do it. And from what I saw, afterward, he compelled you to go with him. It was like watching a zombie. You picked up you pack, he put an arm around your shoulders, and you were walking away with him. To anyone watching, it would have looked as if you wanted to.”

“I don’t remember any of that,” Luke whispered.

“You weren’t supposed to. If I hadn’t stopped him, you would have ended up in his home, and under his control, the same way…” Finn closed his eyes, as if he was remembering—or trying to forget. Luke couldn’t tell which.

“The same way?” he prompted, trying to come to terms with what Finn was telling him. Not that I believe him, because vampires are things of myth.
